I speak as a customer and as someone who once worked in retail for years. I didn’t like having to force a positive happy attitude when I was more comfortable with a professional, but reserved service.

If I go through a checkout line, I don’t really expect or even want the cashier to be bubbly and all smiles. Simply a “your total is…” and maybe a “have a good day” is just fine by me. That’s not to say I want the person to be complaining and/or rude, but I really don’t think retail workers should have to force positivity.
