There is a case to be made about it being the result of “greater personal freedom”, or a slow but sure dying of traditions and traditional expectations. But the largest reason I hear from people around me is that they simply cannot afford having a family of their own. A house? Never mind. Regular vacations? Often quite daunting. Their own student debts, still being paid off, and the thought of having to send someone else through college is horrifying.

Nobody should have a child, or needs to if they do not want it. But a lot of the reasons for not wanting them are pragmatic, based in solid realism with a smidge of nihilism and it’s just… sad. Another sign of a rotten age.
