I acknowledge that as an adult male, I have some advantages over women in this world. I’m somewhat more likely to be hired for a job, I’m less prone to being the victim of certain kinds of violence, and a lot of people would take my opinion more seriously than they would of a comparable woman. My reproductive organs are also lower maintenance which I am very thankful for.

However, I think there is one big disadvantage to being a man. People have less empathy and compassion for you. Adult men, especially young to middle aged men are viewed as being utterly devoid of innocence. Adult men have zero cuteness appeal and generally people do not feel any need to protect them. They can be good or bad, but they’re ultimately expendable and judged solely by what they offer to society. Whereas most people consider women, children, and animals inherently good for the most part.

People judge you more harshly than if you were a woman in a lot of ways. Scientific studies have shown that both men and women are more willing to hurt a man than hurt a woman, and men’s personalities are generally judged more negatively. For example 80% of Americans believe women are more compassionate than men, versus only 5% believing men are more compassionate and 15% believing it’s equal.

When I was a kid people felt protective of me, and showed concern for me. As a 30 year old man, I’m on my own. If I died it would be considered less of a tragedy than if a 30 year old woman died, and much less of a tragedy than if some 10 year old kid died.
